Collin Hanney's photos of his sailboat Balandra
and of Allen & Sharie Farrell's boats
Collin Hanney met Allen Farrell in 1937 in Bargain Harbour. They shared a love of the sea and boat building. When Allen began building Wind Song, a 36-foot schooner, Collin was inspired to build his own sailboat, and Balandra was launched in 1945. See photos of Balanda in our digital collection here.
Collin photographed Allen and Sharie Farrell's boats as they were built (with simple tools and often with beach combed wood), launched and enjoyed. Allen crafted over 40 wooden boats and they sailed the Pacific on many.
