Allen and Sharie Farrell
Allen and Sharie Farrell spent decades homesteading on the British Columbia coast, living lightly off the land. Allen built over 40 wooden boats during a 69 year period. True adventurers and free spirits, they sailed their various boats along the west coast, to Mexico and across the Pacific. WindSong was the first of their off-shore boats, a 36 foot schooner, which they built while living at Bargain Harbour in Pender Harbour. Launched in 1947, they sailed her to Hawaii and then to Fiji in 1951-52.
Allen Farrell also painted in oils for more than 50 years. His scenes of boats, people and outdoor scenes have been collected by many admirers of his work.
The Farrells enjoyed a lifetime of adventure together, spanning over 50 years, and many life-long friends were made along the way.

Barrie Farrell
Barrie passed away September 2022: Memories of Barrie Farrell, by Ian Mackay. Allen's son Barrie started building boats at the age of fourteen with nothing but a few rusty hand tools. That inspiration grew to a lengthy boat-building career, one that spanned many decades and produced over 300 boats. Barrie lived much of his life in Pender Harbour and this is where he made his first fibreglass fish boat. His fibreglass boats became very popular as the designs were beautifully flowing and the boats were fast. His gillnetters and trollers dominated B.C.'s salmon fleet in the 1970s and 1980s. Barrie is now an artist and lives in the Nanaimo area. The Pender Harbour Living Heritage Society are caretakers of one of Barrie's speed boats built in 1968. View the gallery. |
